Password Reset For LSUHSC Account
To restore web-based password reset capability for your account, follow the instructions on this web link: https://intranet.lsuhsc.edu/passwordprotect.
You only have to do it once, it’s simple, only takes a minute or so, and will allow you to reset your password from the web again.
It is natural to wonder why this is necessary. The University is taking this step to strengthen its security measures that protect its faculty, staff, students and patients. This change will reduce the likelihood that a perpetrator can access your computer account by resetting your password in the event they are able to steal your personal identifying information.
We are addressing this by asking you to supply the answers to three simple questions from a list of about 20 questions. These questions have the characteristic that it is information only you would likely know, you would likely never forget, and would not likely be available from a compromised source. These questions are along the lines of “What is the name of your first pet?” You will be expected to provide the answer to one of these questions, picked at random, whenever you request to reset your password, whether you use the website or call the Helpdesk.
This is not a problem unique to us and this solution is similar to how others are addressing the issue. It is popular because it requires a minimal one-time effort and is very difficult to thwart.
Without this information, the only way we can be sure of identity is to show up in person with a picture ID. So, it is very important that you supply this information. Without it, we cannot reset your password unless you report to IT and show a picture ID.
In many cases, especially in a patient care setting, resetting a password can be an extremely urgent situation. Having to show up at IT with a picture ID is not practical under those circumstances. Because of this, supplying this information will soon become a condition of having a computer account.
After a brief grace period, for 5 days we will send daily reminder emails to those who have not supplied the information. On the sixth day we will disable the account. The only way to re-enable the account will be to report to IT with a picture ID and supply answers to these questions.
To those in management and supervisory positions, and especially those in a patient care setting, I ask you to remind and encourage your staff to complete this information as soon as practical.
Thanks for your help and support in protecting the data of our faculty, staff, students and patients.
David Troendle, Assistant Vice Chancellor for IT
